A year after a heart attack brought his charity hiking plans to an abrupt halt, Specification Manager Martin Roberts has completed the Macmillan Mighty Hike Half Marathon in the Cotswolds.
Martin has shared his story as part of our Wellbeing Month, highlighting the importance of setting personal goals and finding motivation during recovery.

In June 2025, Martin was preparing for his fourth hike in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, raising money in memory of his mum and grandma, who both died of cancer. But during a training walk in the countryside, he suffered a heart attack and was unable to take part.

After a year of recovery, including regular gym sessions and a renewed focus on his fitness, Martin returned to the challenge in September.
He completed more than 14 miles through the Cotswolds countryside, tackling some sizeable hills before crossing the finish line at Blenheim Palace.

“Having the target of being fit enough to complete another charity hike really helped my recovery and gave me a focus and reason to get better,” said Martin.
“After a year of recovery, countless bowls of porridge, a lot of gym sessions and losing more weight than I expected, it was fantastic to get back out there and complete the hike.
“My next target is another half marathon next year!”
