A water efficiency training programme has reached more than 200 staff across 30 residential developers, opening up new specification opportunities while helping housebuilders navigate changing requirements and contributing to industry discussions.
The initiative was developed by Training Manager Chris Pearson and Marketing Executive Kelly Beazer after discovering that many developers were unaware of the Environmental Incentive Schemes (EIS) introduced across England from April this year.
The schemes offer financial incentives for building homes that exceed minimum water efficiency requirements.
“I contacted water authorities across England to understand their individual schemes and developed a presentation showing how our products could help developers meet their requirements,” said Chris.
“Developers are generally more interested in what products look like and how much they cost than the technical specifications, so we framed the training around the practical benefits and the opportunities to make their projects work.
“It’s about sharing our knowledge while helping ensure our products are considered when specifications are being developed.”
Steve Wilkinson, National Account Manager for National Housebuilders, brought valuable experience from his work over recent years with developers in the Severn Trent region, where he had seen first-hand the challenges created by scheme requirements.
“The response from water authorities and developers has been really positive,” said Steve.
“By bringing the different parties together and demonstrating our expertise, we’re helping developers find practical solutions while building relationships that can lead to new specification opportunities.”
He added: “Our engagement has also helped move the discussion around secondary flow regulators forward, with an OFWAT consultation now considering their use.
“This could give developers greater flexibility in the showers they specify.”
Discussions resulting from the training now cover specification changes across more than 20,000 planned homes, representing significant potential for new business and increased share of wallet.
The team has presented to Severn Trent Water, Affinity Water, Anglian Water and the House Builder Federation, with product details and sample specifications now featured on Severn Trent Water’s website.
