A photography student has captured some of the architectural gems from our Armitage site as part of a college project.
Evie Carter, 17, who lives less than a mile away in Handsacre, had chosen to focus on the 1920s for a study on “people” as she loves art deco.
The brief for the second year photography student, who attends South Staffordshire College Lichfield campus, was to take inspiration from an era or decade and make a study.
During a conversation about her project with Export Co-ordinator Alex Willmore, she was told about the 1920s original features at the Armitage site and some of the hidden treasures within the building.
Evie (pictured above) said: “This peaked my interest greatly as to have this within my village was an opportunity I couldn’t miss so Alex said she would ask if it was possible for me to come and take some pictures.
“During my visit I had permission to take photographs of the art deco mosaics, tiling and art deco features scattered throughout the building but some of my favourite things I had the privilege of seeing were the old safe within one of the offices which has never been opened, the switches found set in wall and the old original elevator.
“Alongside this I was also was given a factory tour. I found it all extremely intriguing and not only did I get my 1920s fix but I loved the factory tour and the pictures I took of the workers are some of my favourites, which will be used for my environmental portraits for my final project and portfolio.”
She added: “My first experience with Armitage Shanks was my grandad’s 1970s bathroom suite in avocado and, being able to develop from that, I’ve loved learning our local history.
“I now have some great photographs towards my projects, more than I came for, which is due to be submitted in February.
“The tour was extremely interesting. Who knew toilets could be so fascinating?!”
