Name: Samantha Gibson
Job title: Financial Accountant

Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m 28 years old and live in Cottingham with my partner, Jon. We’ve recently got a puppy, a Maltipoo called Paddy. We’ve got quite lucky as he is quite chilled, but he does have his mad zoomies around the garden at least twice a day. We moved into our house about 18 months ago and we’re still in the decorating phase, although it’s been a bit stop and start especially when the sun manages to come out. We usually spend weekends finishing bits in the house or taking Paddy for a walk (via the local pub).

Paddy1 Describe your job to a five-year-old
I try to show when money will be paid in and out of the company.

What do you like most about your job?
I like that working in finance can be quite varied and involved with all aspects of the business.

How did you get here?
I applied to study nursing at university, but before accepting I decided that it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so I started a Business Admin apprenticeship at Tevalis, a company based in Hull who provide Epos systems to hospitality venues. It was only a small company at the time, and I worked directly under the Financial Controller, so I naturally moved into an accounting role. I completed my AAT course and then progressed on to CIMA, becoming qualified in November 2021. After being at Tevalis for 9 years, I decided I wanted to explore different aspects of accounting and experience working in a larger company.

What motivates you?
Learning new things and being able to put them into practice.

If you could swap jobs with anyone, who would it be?
A location scout; someone who finds the best locations for films.

Your favourite song lyric or line from a film
“The best things in life, the very best things happen unexpectedly.” – Mamma Mia

Your favourite app?
Due to the amount of time I can spend on it, it would have to be TikTok

Biggest facepalm moment at work?
I don’t think I’ve had one just yet, but I’m sure there’ll be one eventually.
