Warehouse Operative Stuart Carr is biking 200 miles to raise funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance, three years to the day since the flying paramedics saved his life.
Stuart was in a large group of cyclists near Kings Bromley when he clipped the wheel of the bike in front and came crashing down on the wrong side of the road, narrowly avoiding an oncoming car.
He was knocked unconscious and his life was saved when a passing nurse stopped and told the emergency call handler that he would not survive the 15-minute wait for a normal ambulance.
The air ambulance team were on site within minutes and put Stuart in an induced coma, getting him to hospital in Stoke 30 miles away in only eight minutes.
He was in a coma for four days, having sustained fractures to his skull, eye socket, cheek bone, collar bone and pelvis, as well as a bleed on the brain, staying in hospital for three weeks.
Despite still living with the effects of his injuries, Stuart is determined to show his gratitude to the organisation that saved his life.
Between friends, family and work colleagues, he has already raised £800 and is now seeing how far he can push the total.
He said: “I really can’t thank these guys enough. This bike ride will be a big test, my biggest journey by a fair few miles but these guys are worth every pound I can raise.
“The air ambulance is solely funded by donations and charity work. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here so I’m hoping people will dig deep.”
The route for Stuart’s 200 mile ride will take him from Burntwood into the hills of the Welsh coast to Barmouth, with 12,000 feet of climbing in total, all in one day.
