An Ideal Standard team recently entered a charity fundraising five-a-side football tournament in support of the Hull-based Smile Foundation. Here, captain Richard Jones reports on how it went.
After much consideration and deliberation, the boots were dusted off, and the Ideal Standard team was formed. Fresh from a training session at the local park, the team was keen to impress at the Smile Foundation five-a-side tournament.
Led by team captain Richard Jones, the team looked to play some expansive, free-flowing football on the day, the team consisting of club legends James Burton, Dan French, Paddy Green, Ivan Adzic and Dom Walton.
We launched into the first game with high expectations. These were quickly neutralised as we suffered our first defeat which also resulted in an injury to Paddy Green during a heroic goal-saving tackle.
We fared better as we grew into the tournament and really found our style of play, but at the end of our league games we found ourselves with no wins…
The Smile Plate play-off game ensued for a place in the knockout stages. A strong performance brought home the points with a 2-0 win with a goal for mercurial striker Dan French, who stole the ball from the goalie and slotted home for our first goal of the day. The win was secured with a goal from Ivan, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
A quarter-final loomed against local internet firm KCOM. Despite a strong performance from all, we succumbed to a 2-1 defeat as the injuries throughout the team mounted.
But a great day had by all involved and for a great cause.
Below are some action photos from the day.
